Behind the Scenes
This cover was edited and created using Pixlr. To start, I set off in search of an old, metal spiral staircase with a top-down view (very specific criteria, I know). My search was inspired by the description of the staircase gong throughout the silo in Wool’s story.
I found the base image for this cover on Pixabay, which has gorgeous images registered for creative-commons use. This initial image has a lot going in in terms of its color saturation and layout, so I desaturated it slightly, and put a transparent light-brown rectangle over the whole image.
I thought that was a little plain, so I added the mud/rust and blurred it so the image didn’t become too busy. This was found on pngtree, by searching “rust.”
Last came the text, which was having trouble popping, so I added that dark-brown transparent rounded-edged rectangle behind it. Scrolling through the fonts, the one I chose just seemed to fit with the scene intuitively.
Overall, I’d say it’s a pretty decent book-cover… hire me Hugh Howey.
