This writing assignment is in homage to Black Mirror, Season 4, Episode 5: Metalhead. The GIF on the assignment page is what inspired me!
I created directories, files, and code such that it depicts the story from the killer machine’s point of view – told from the recovery file on its hard rive. We can imagine we’ve plugged the drive in, and are digging through its “black box” of information.
Feel free to pause the video, and read the output at your leisure:
I hope you enjoyed! I spent a lot of time on this because I liked the idea so much.
Behind the Scenes
On a server, I made several file directories that I imagined you might find in a killer robot’s hard drive. They’re all for show of course, except “BlackBox.” Inside BlackBox there are more directories and text files that imply those are where the logs are stored. Again, they’re all empty except “RECOVERY.c,” where I housed the code to make all these print statements:
As you can see, I didn’t actually program a “Dog Unit Recovery Wizard” and read from numerous text files – I just made it seem that way through all of my print statements. Most of my time was sunk into trying to keep all the syntax in the prints the same. This was in order to keep the illusion that there is a very algorithmic system writing to these log files.
The implementation of this story is interesting because, not only does it tell the story between the woman and the DOG, it alludes to another story: the story of the person accessing this drive. I don’t provide much in terms of this other story, but it’s there nonetheless, and it’s fun to think of whether the “bad guys” or the “good guys” got a hold of this drive.
