Behind the Scenes
I made theme song for Wool based on this assignment!
I made this piece in about an hour and a half using FL Studio. I chose to use heavy reverb because I thought that’s how it might sound if you played this song in a silo. I chose a VST close grand piano as the single instrument because, first, I can’t play piano, and second, because piano is versatile. I wanted parts of the song to be calm and others to be powerful without having the complexity of multiple instruments. The part that took the most time was selectively changing the velocity on certain notes, or groups of notes, so the piano sounded dynamic, as though someone was actually playing it.
I wanted to incorporate imagery of the world outside the silos, so I added the wind gusting at certain parts. I added the birds chirping briefly to represent what people see when they clean, but it all gets quickly swept away by the outside. I feel this song tells the journey of one who finds the truth, and goes to clean. There’s a build up at the beginning (discovering the truth), the climax in the middle (fighting, or being arrested and put to the cleaning), and the peaceful end (when they step outside and blissfully experience the lie IT has provided).
